Kapiti’s location means that it can be a long run to CCDHB hospitals and clinical appointments in Wellington and Lower Hutt.  Otaki, which is in Mid-Central Health Board area, has a weekdays  health shuttle to Palmerston North.  Typically, taxi transport Paraparaumu-Wellington costs about $160, including the maximum $40 Total Mobility discount.  Some trains and buses are not wheelchair accessible.  Some of the other transport modes can carry a folding wheelchair.  The main providers are:

Otaki Health Shuttle

St John provides weekdays door-to-door transport at fixed times from Otaki for health and clinical appointments in Palmerston North.  Wheelchair-capable vehicle.  Donations.  Contact 06 3645603.

Paraparaumu Taxis

Operates three vans with wheelchair lifts, busiest times of day (with school transport) 8-9.30am, 2.45-3.15pm.  Total Mobility vouchers accepted.  Contact phone 2961111.

Kapiti Health Shuttle

Monday-to-Thursday transport in 11-seater vehicle for Kapiti patients with appointments between 10am and 11am at Wellington or Kenepuru hospitals. Space for folding chair if van not full. For carer support, seat needs to be specified when booking. Cost: Donations. Contact phone 2973142.

Kapiti Carers

Volunteer drivers for older people who need support and assistance.  Cost:  Donations $10 (medical appointments in Paraparaumu, Paekakariki and Waikanae), $20 (Kenepuru Hospital), $30 (Hutt Hospital) $40 (Wellington Hospital).

Cancer Society Wellington

Local volunteer transport for referred cancer patients to treatment and appointments at Wellington and Kenepuru hospitals.  Contact phone 3898421.

Freedom Companion Drivers

If you’re

  • Over 70 OR physically impaired (age neutral)
  • Likely to be discharged from CCDHB’s Emergency Department after 10pm or overnight

Either an overnight admission will be arranged or the following conditions will be met:

  1. Staff will discuss and arrange your safe return home with a family member, friend or relative, or
  2. Taxis or other secure transport (such as Free Ambulance patient transport service, or with a relative or friend) must be arranged


If your treatment plan includes an elective (non-emergency) surgical operation, ask your GP if it can be done by day-surgery in Kapiti or Levin by the Mobile Surgical unit that visits this area regularly.  Typical procedures include removing cataracts, repairing hernias, carpal tunnel and urology problems.

The accessible mobile unit operates close to the Kapiti Health Centre in Warrimoo Street.

It usually  visits us every 6-8 weeks. All day mostly come on a Monday or Tuesday
